So, what can you expect? For lack of a better term, good old-fashioned Hard Rock rooted in the late '70s and early '80s. And no, we're not talking sugary, radio-friendly fluff. This is built on classic hooks, huge Rock melodies and serious vocal firepower. In spots, Maggy reminds me of Bonnie Tyler, Sandi Saraya and Chrissy Steele, which is fantastic. I hardly ever hear those kinds of influences anymore, and I'm probably one of the few people who still remember and appreciates all three. When I first caught wind of Rock Justice and saw the Doro connection, I figured I'd be getting something in that vein. Not even close, and that's actually a good thing. There's only one Doro, and Rock Justice doesn’t spend a second trying to copy her. They're carving out their own identity, and they're doing a damn fine job of it. Keeping with the classic Hard Rock formula, “You've Been Served” clocks in at a lean 30 minutes with just eight tracks, one of which is an interesting take on Willie Dixon's "I Just Want To Make Love To You." Let's be honest, this song has been covered to death. I first heard it through Foghat, later discovered Dixon's original, and I've played it in cover bands over the years. It's become a bit worn out for me, but Rock Justice breathes some fresh life into it. Luyten absolutely owns the song with a phenomenal vocal performance. Truth be told, Luyten is the real star of this album. Her vocal chops are top-tier, and this style of singing has become increasingly rare in today's Hard Rock scene. It seems like we're either getting steamrolled by endless growls or having our faces melted by over-the-top falsettos. Luyten's gravel-throated, Blues-soaked delivery sits right in the sweet spot and ties the entire record together beautifully. The immortal Metal Queen, Doro, makes a guest appearance on the track "First In Line." I was genuinely excited to see her name attached to the record and expected her cameo to be a major highlight. It certainly adds something, but honestly, Luyten is so strong throughout the album that Doro's appearance doesn't overshadow anything. That might be a tough thing to admit, but from where I'm standing, it's the truth. “You've Been Served” is a near-perfect Hard Rock record. In my opinion, it's the finest work any of these musicians have been involved with to date. If you're an old-school Hard Rock fan who's been craving big riffs, memorable hooks and powerhouse vocals without all the modern gimmicks, Rock Justice just served up exactly what you've been waiting for. Standouts – “You Know Better”, “Chicks Can’t Rock”, “My Worst Enemy” and “Shape Up Or Ship Out”.

Maggy fait preuve d’une remarquable aisance et réussit à moduler sa voix en fonction des atmosphères, que ce soit sur les morceaux mélodiques, ou les plus Heavy comme “Eternal Winter”, par exemple.

Wat zij kan doen met met haar stem is fenomenaal. Ze kan klinken als Russell Allen en Jorn Lande, maar heeft ook een zachtheid in haar stem die moeiteloos met de muziek samensmelt in tere balladen. The Unexpected is een mooi album geworden.

Il y a 3 ans, jour pour jour, j’avais rencontré Maggy au Noise Factory Studio de Wierde (Namur). La chanteuse belge était en plein boom avec le groupe de metal français Nightmare. Pour différentes raisons, l’article n’avait pas pu être publié. On a remis ça cette année, dans les locaux de Myriad Voice à Dinant. Il s’en est passé des choses depuis 2017. Maggy a quitté Nightmare en février 2019 et a des nouveaux projets plein la tête.

Les initiés le savent : THE PRIZE, c’est le nouveau projet de MAGGY LUYTEN/chant (AYREON, BEAUTIFUL SIN et ex-NIGHTMARE) et de CHRISTOPHE GODIN/guitare (de MORGBL’, ex-GNO) avec en renfort la grosse artillerie de MORGBL’ en les personnes d’IVAN « le Terrible » ROUGNY à la basse et d’AUREL OUZOULIAS (également batteur de SATAN JOKER) aux fûts. Ce premier soir, ce concert clôt une semaine de résidence et de répétitions au Brin de Zinc.

“Ride the Comet” brings back Renkse and introduces Maggy Luyten [Nightmare] as an unusual but incredible pairing. Luyten was yet another unknown to me and my first impression was… holy shit, who is this amazing rocker lady? She’s unbelievable.

Et c’est parti ! MAGUY LUYTEN au piano, FRANCOIS BRISK à la batterie. D’entrée de jeu, je sais que ça va être grand. Sa voix ressort à merveille, pas de triche, pas d’aide. Ouah, c’est sublime !! Elle va même nous jouer un morceau, seule au clavier. On a tous les poils qui remontent. L’émotion qu’elle dégage est entièrement partagée par le public. Et encore une fois, quelle voix ! Allez, c’est le moment où les amis entrent sur scène, STEVEN SEGARRA et CHRISTOPHE GODIN à la guitare. Ca me donne à nouveau la chair de poule. YVES CAMPION est bien-sûr de la fête, calé dans un coin avec sa basse, pour du NIGHTMARE acoustique. Putain, ça fonctionne grave en plus ! C’est top d’entendre d’autres versions !! KELLY SUNDOWN CARPENTER (lead vocal de CIVIL WAR et d’ADAGIO) est présent sur scène. MAGGY se lève et redevient la chanteuse metal qu’elle est ! On a droit à un morceau de AYREON où elle a officié au chant. En bref, vous l’aurez compris, c’est un enchaînement de surprises avec des amis venus jouer pour le fun… mais de quelle façon ! Il ne suffit pas de jouer une mélodie, il faut se l’approprier avec son coeur, avec toute son âme, et c’est ce qu’ils ont réussi à nous faire vivre ce soir. Non seulement ils ont partagé leur musique mais ils nous ont aussi ouvert leurs émotions. MAGGY LUYTEN a clairement démontré qu’elle évoluait dans la cour des très grandes chanteuses. Ouah, et dire que tout ça c’est du bonus !

But the biggest surprise of that song, if not the whole night? Maggy Luyten, singer of Nightmare from France and a singer this writer had overlooked before. And hates himself for it now. This little power pack rocked the song (and the other ones that she was singing in), sang Damian Wilson to the ground (who would have thought that was possible!?) and gained a big amount of new instant fans. Discovery of the weekend! Oh, and she was singing Russel Allen’s part. Take that!

C’est toujours un plaisir de retrouver THE PRIZE au Brin de Zinc qui est presque une seconde maison (musicale) pour eux ! Surtout qu’une semaine auparavant, CHRISTOPHE GODIN (guitare), YVAN ROUGNY (basse) et AUREL OUZOULIAS (batterie), avaient sévi en ce lieu, pour la reformation exclusive des défunts MÖRGBL’.

Maggy Luyten, gezegend met een van de beste rockstrotten van de wereld, zoniet de beste, gaat deze middag helemaal los met haar krachtige uitvoeringen van “2 Minutes To Midnight”, “Futureal”, “Children Of The Damned” en “The Trooper”. Lenig als een kat en boordevol expressie sleurt dit podiumbeest je de rock dimensie in. Maggy bouwt haar eigen feestje, rekt nummers gewoon nog even op en brengt de zaal in opperste extase. Hoezo akoestisch, dit rockt op weergaloze wijze en heel de zaal brult mee.

Belgian singer Magali Luyten is not filling magazine front covers, but for number of years, she is well established with metal first league. With her amazing talent and characteristic vocal she could deserve to be called “Ronnie James Dio in skirt”. During her career she has formed projects as Beautiful Sin, Virus IV but her current focus is French band Nightmare. On the other hand, she has built up her reputation mainly because of cooperation with Dutch composer and multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen in his project Ayreon, whether it was in studio or live recently. It was a great honor to interview big fan of Sennheiser microphones not only about her Top 10 albums, but also about current activities, vocal teaching through MYRIAD VOICE, career challenges and future plans. Maggy’s intro for her Top 10 albums: “There are many other artists that inspire me but here are the albums that made me grow as a musician, as a singer…”

Disons le tout de suite, "The Unexpected" est absolument énorme de bout en bout. La formation évite tous les clichés du genre, loin des groupes féminins à la mode actuellement. Magali évolue en effet entre Doro et Kimberly Goss (Sinergy) tout en sachant se faire plus douce. La musique ne sonne heureusement pas comme Helloween, se situant plus dans une veine metal mélodique avec un petit côté pop-rock, en partie grâce au chant.

Der mittlerweile in Norwegen lebende Masterplan/Ex-Helloween-Drummer Uli Kusch bringt mit BEAUTIFUL SIN eine neue Band an den Start. Eine weitere überflüssige Nebenbaustelle eines sich unausgelastet fühlenden Musikers? Mitnichten! Denn mit Masterplan-Keyboarder Axel Mackenrott und den beiden Pagan´s-Mind-Recken Jorn Viggo und Steinar Krokmo an Gitarre und Bass hat Uli eine exzellente Könnertruppe zusammengestellt, mit der er seine Ideen perfekt umsetzen kann. So wird der an sich konventionelle Melodic Metal der Truppe immer wieder durch unkonventionelle, in Richtung Pop, Prog und Rock schielende Elemente aufgelockert und hebt sich so wohltuend von vielen traditioneller ausgerichteten Langweiler-Combos ab. Ein weiterer großer Pluspunkt ist die aus Belgien stammende, mit einer kraftvollen Powerröhre gesegnete Frontlady Magali Luyten, deren eher rockiger als metallischer Gesang die Songs entscheidend prägt. Darunter einige kapitale Ohrwürmer wie der Opener ´Lost´ (eine gelungene Neubearbeitung der alten, seinerzeit von Uli Kusch geschriebenen Helloween-Nummer ´The Departed (Sun Is Going Down)´) oder das mit recht witzig eingebauten 'Ohoho'-Chören versehene ´The Spark Of Ignition´.

Metalfreak et moi-même (Antirouille) avons donné rendez-vous à Maggy aux Studios KNT d’Echirolles (38) et c’est sur une terrasse baignée des rayons d’un soleil qui chauffait encore en ce mois d’octobre, qu’elle s’est prêtée au jeu des questions réponses.

She is a Heavy Metal singer! She has a really nice hoarse voice (a bit like Skin of Skunk Anansie) and believe me, it's good to listen to this kind of singer nowadays. First because it's new and uncommon and second because it proves that female singers into Metal can do others stuff than Gothic or Symphonic music. Magali doesn't suffer of any comparison with the others guys who sing in the same category, at the opposite she gives a lot of others things and possibilities to the music through her original voice and that's classy.

Récemment, Maggy Luyten et Christophe Godin se sont associés pour former un magnifique duo de reprises : Akoustic Thrill, avec pour moteur le plaisir, le fun, mais sans oublier une énorme qualité musicale. Cette association fonctionnant à merveille, ils se sont dit qu’il serait dommage de ne pas aller plus loin dans leur collaboration. C’est donc assez naturellement qu’ils ont créé le groupe The Prize, avec l’ajout des autres membres de Mörglbl – Ivan Rougny et Aurélien Ouzoulias. L’expérience et la créativité de ces musiciens faisaient saliver d’avance, mais on pouvait également se poser la question de l’adaptation des musiciens de Mörglbl pour passer de la fusion instrumentale à un format plus classique avec une chanteuse. Le premier album éponyme sorti récemment répond largement à cette question et est à la hauteur des espérances suscitées, proposant un metal moderne bien groovy. Nous avons profité de l’échange qui suit avec Maggy pour parler de la naissance du groupe, de sa relation avec les autres membres, du processus de création, mais aussi de ce qui les anime dans ce nouveau projet. Elle nous explique d’ailleurs leur volonté commune de proposer une musique qui ne se veut pas démonstrative, mais au service des chansons. Enfin, cela a aussi été l’occasion de revenir sur sa riche carrière musicale.
